Manchester City-owned midfielder Anthony Cáceres has joined UAE side Al Wasl after one and a half years on loan at sister club Melbourne City.

The 24-year-old is moving to the Dubai-based club on an initial loan deal with an option to buy, after becoming frustrated by a lack of game time in Melbourne. Melbourne City’s signing of Stefan Mauk led to the move.

Al Wasl’s Argentine coach Rodolfo Arruabarrena, who like Cáceres has Uruguayan heritage, recently called the player and convinced him to move to Al Wasl, a club previously coached by the legendary Diego Maradona.

Manchester City paid around £145,000 to sign Cáceres from the Central Coast Mariners in January 2016, instantly loaning him to Melbourne City, where he played until deciding on a new adventure in the Middle East.
